Vegetation Downloads These shapefiles contain digital representations of the hard copy maps published in the U.S. Forest Service document Silvics of North America. For each mapped tree specie, a single or multiple polygon features capture the approximate limits of the published native ranges. This project was undertaken to augment land use land cover data with additional tree diversity information. You can view a more detailed discussion of this subject in the paper: Very High-Detail Depictions of Forest in Virtual Environments. The image at the bottom of this page provides an example of the type of detail we are stiving for. Notice: These shapefiles contain digital representations of the hard copy maps published in the U.S. Forest Service document Silvics of North America. Due to the nature of the source maps, the fact that they were originally scanned copies of very small-scale paper maps, the spatial accuracy of this data must be considered as only approximate representations of the true native ranges of each particular tree specie. Each shapefile contains a metadata file in standard FGDC XML format. Included in this file is a list of attribute enumeration values for the TNUM field - with both scientific and common names for the tree species itemized within the shapefile. |
